The story was diverting, though fairly predictable. The heroine was feisty, which is always a plus, had an interesting name, and her humorous comments were a welcome addition. But I think it might have been more interesting if only she noticed the "strange occurrences", at least in the beginning. Unfortunately, the plot was very disappointing, because the details (the full truth) were never revealed at the end, and that caused the ending to fizzle out. Why devote the time to develop a plot, only to rush through the resolution? The story was interesting until halfway through, but would have been better if it had taken another route, considering there were about a dozen other possibilities. I also felt that the story would have been better if it hadn't been composed of hundreds of tiny paragraphs, when it would have "flowed" better if ideas had been combined more smoothly. It may not seem important, but this writing skill underlies (and affects) the entire reading experience. But what was more annoying was one little spelling error that occurred 100% of the time. I know this seems like an overreaction for a non-writer, but I'd still like to offer an important reminder for the author and her editor (who should not be thanked for her "amazing" skills, but fired). There are always some common spelling errors, in great books and humble ones, and regardless of whether it's published by a big name company with highly experienced editors, or self published. It's the "law of averages" that a few mistakes appear. (Though I doubt the same problems I just saw would show up in "Pride and Prejudice").
The word "you're" was incorrectly spelled in every single sentence! The author is a teacher and deals with y.a. books, hence she should know how to spell! It's no big deal, and a few misspelled words are expected. But when it happens in every 20 sentences, it's distracting! So here's a 4th grade English rule to guide you when completing your next work:
"YOU'RE is spelled as a contraction when it means "YOU ARE". You + are = Y-O-U, followed by an apostrophe, then R-E. "YOUR" is a possessive pronoun, implying "ownership" (for example "Take your coat".) You're is a pronoun + verb:
"You're wrong". An apostrophe looks like this: ' and can be used to connect two words to form a contraction.
I'm aware that this may seem really mean spirited and petty, but a friend of mine just published his own book, and could barely afford the editor or cover artist. He worked so hard to avoid appearing "inexperienced" that he went over the several hundred pages at least twenty times, had friends edit it, gave it to an editor, and then re-read it. When you put a book on the market, you should care enough to insure that it appears to be written by an adult author instead of a middle school writer.
